Rate setting is always a difficult bit of business. This is especially true for editors.
I prefer charging by the page, as it allows room for differences in the amount of work any given manuscript will require.
Now, a page in my reckoning, is whatever fits on a double-spaced, 12 pt., Times New Roman, .doc or .docx format. Usually about 250 words, but it is what it is.
- For proofreading I charge $2.00/page.
- For line editing, I charge $3.20/page.
- For developmental editing I charge $3.00/page. This specifically does not include any line editing, and tends to take only a few hours for the initial read through and a few more for Skype meetings and other editing.
- For content editing, I charge $4.00/page. This is the most intensive editing service, working in both line editing and developmental editing. It is hard to estimate pages/hour, as this service also includes a fair number of meetings between myself and the author.
Upon receipt of services, you will be emailed an itemized invoice via PayPal for the balance, to which payment can be submitted securely by personal PayPal account. As I know that editing can be expensive, and paying a hefty sum at once can be difficult, I am also willing to work out flexible payment plans, over the course of a few weeks or months. I generally do not agree to less than $40/week for these plans, but i am willing to negotiate.
